In the past the rapper Ya, formally known as Kanye West was accused of antisemitism. This was after Ye posted antisemitic comments on several platforms. He now apologized to the Jewish community on Tuesday. This appology was tweeted in Hebrew. Some influential members of the Jewish community already welcomed his apology.
The controversy around Ye being antisemitic
It started in October 2022 after he wore a shirt saying “White Lives Matter” at the Fashion Week in Paris. He also posted an antisemitic tweet where he Threatened to go “death con 3 on JEWISH PEOPLE”. On top of that in an Instagram Post he shared screenshots of text exchanges with the producer Sean Combs where he suggests that Jewish people are controlling the the music mogul. Even though he previously apologized for tweets the rapper continued to make comments like those before. He said in an interview with a right wing commentator that he loves Jewish people but also loves Nazis. He said “I do love Hitler”.
In this new album Victorious, Ye raps about him not being antisemitic because he had sex with a Jewish woman. He planned to release the album on December 15th but then he postponed it to January 12th. Nicki Minaj caused the delay because she denied to sing in any of Ye’s songs.
The future of Ye
The Anti Defamation League set on Tuesday that his apology was welcome. They Also mentioned though that actions speak louder than words. Ye will have to prove that he actually regrets his past antisemitic Statements in the future. A spokesman said in an email:
“After causing untold damage by using his vast influence and platform to poison countless minds with vicious antisemitism and hate, an apology in Hebrew may be the first step on a long journey toward making amends to the Jewish community and all those who he has hurt.”

It’s going to be interesting to see in the future if Kanye actually meant what he said in his apology. Even if we successfully avoid comments like these in the future it will be very hard to not say almost impossible to recreate his previous reputation.
