OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT, and Microsoft are in talks with companies in the news industry. The copyrights of the data used by artificial intelligence and how to deal with fake news are the main topics of discussion. For that OpenAI and Microsoft have negotiations with the media industry to get rid of these problems. Sadly without a major success for now.
The problems with OpenAI and the media industry
After a very successful period where society uses programs like ChatGPT almost every day, people are now starting to think about the issues of copyright and fake news. This discussion started because of the media industry, as chatbots like ChatGPT are based on their articles. The problem now: This process is happening without the legal consent of the media. In response, OpenAI is now in talks with media giants such as The New York Times, Gannet, News Corp (owner of The Wall Street Journal and IAC), the digital colossus behind The Daily Beast and Dotdash Meredith.
Based on to the problems with ChatGPT, The New York Times has now sued OpenAI and Microsoft for training its chatbot with millions of articles from the newspaper. The Times is the first major newspaper to sue OpenAI. OpenAI reacted “surprised and disappointed” because of the ongoing negotiations between them and the media industry.
How Fake News affect negotiations between OpenAI and media industry
With the Chatbots using the data from newspapers, there is a high risk of fake news with these Chatbots. This is because journalists might not write something wrong but then they correct it afterwards. In the period of time between, the public will have access to these Fake News and since almost nobody questions Artificial Intelligence Fake News might spread easily. Because of this the reputation of the members of the media industry could be affected. And when that is the case and the lawsuit of The Times is successful, OpenAI and Microsoft will have a lot to pay and it will be unclear what role these two and their Chatbot will play in the future.
Some media companies don’t want commercial deals
The goal will be to get an agreement with OpenAI to pay the newspapers a certain amount of money. That is so provide for the work of the journalists and to avoid a major loss for the media industry. Companies like Bloomberg though are not interested in a commercial deal. Bloomberg itself is focused on their own A.I. system and the development of it. The Washington Post hasn’t been in negotiations either.
